How and What I Think
If you are reading this, you are probably one of the luckiest humans ever to have lived. But to paraphrase Spiderman’s Uncle Ben, “With great fortune comes great responsibility.” I feel that I have an obligation — to my principles, to my family, my neighbors, my country, and the planet — to make a better world.
If I have a god, it is Life… not just my life, but all life, in all its forms. You can call it Nature — the vast, various, complex and interdependent system of organisms and behaviors that makes all our lives possible. There is something wonderful about a self-replicating, evolving being that almost makes me believe in perfectibility.
But my religion, if you want to call it that, is Science, and I think in terms of Systems. The Ecosystem is just that; a system, or rather a system of systems. Weather is a system. A cell is a system. An organism is a system of cells. A society is a system of organisms. The Ecosystem — Life — depends on the healthy interaction between its subsystems for its stability and continuity. When well organized and well regulated, these systems can operate for a very long time. When they are not sustainably organized and regulated, they break down. In other words, while Life is remarkably resilient, it is also fragile.
We humans have, for better or worse, become disproportionately influential on the health of our ecosystem — our planet. This compels us to think bigger, beyond ourselves and even our local communities. After all, what is good for a virus is not good for the body. We need to think on a planetary scale, and to think in terms of Sustainability, first and foremost.
Human society is expressed in our government, which is how we shape our civilization. My driving principle is Sustainability — environmental, social, governmental, and yes, economic. I have attempted to apply this principle to my individual daily life, but global results require a global effort, which means all of us. It means educating and influencing our neighbors, our community, and ultimately the leaders of our government to take action to undo the harm and start building a sustainable world. This is a major reason why I have built this site.
My Insanely Short Bio
Born and raised in the upper-middle class suburbs of Detroit, Michigan, I attended the University of Michigan, where I received Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Trumpet Performance. For 11 years, I played Principal Trumpet in the Lansing Symphony, taught private trumpet lessons, ran a live concert and recital recording business, and freelanced all over the state of Michigan, including playing extra in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, backup for the Temptations and Four Tops, and innumerable weddings and church services.
At the age of 30, I returned to U of M for an MBA, whereupon I embarked on a 30-year career in High Tech, including 17 years in Networking and 13 years in LED lighting, both of which I saw as changing the world in a good way. During this time, I co-founded a startup in the Smart City space that was eventually purchased by Verizon.
I retired in 2020 and returned to Music. I am now coaching young brass players at two of the local high schools, teaching private trumpet lessons, and am increasingly active in local community organizing. And of course, I am publishing this website. I am a husband and father of two adult children of whom I am very proud, a passionate environmentalist, a voracious reader of history, economics and science fiction, a news junkie, an organic gardener, a do-it-yourselfer, and an avid cyclist who can be followed on Strava.
